Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ulrich Brand, Department of Political Science at Vienna University, born in 1967, holds a doctoral degree in Political Science from Goethe-University Frankfurt/M. and the title “Privatdozent” for his Habilitation from Kassel University. He worked from 2001-2007 as an Assistant Professor at Kassel University and joined Vienna University in 2007 as Chair of International Politics. He has studied, conducted research, and taught abroad at the University of Buenos Aires, National Autonomous University Mexico, York University Toronto, and Rutgers University in the U.S. He works on globalization and global governance; NGOs; environmental, resource, and climate politics; and social-ecological transformation.
Ulrich Brand was actively involved in the development of the European Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) CLIMATE and is member of its Transdisciplinary Advisory Board (TAB).
From 2006 to 2012, Ulrich Brand was co-chair of the section “Political Economy” of the German Association of Political Science (DVPW). He was an expert member of the Enquete Commission “Growth, Well-Being and Quality of Life” of the German Bundestag (January 2011-June 2013). Since 2011 he has been a member of a research group on resource extractivism in Latin America. Since October 2012, he has been Head of Department of Political Science and since 2013 he has coordinated the faculty-wide research platform “Governance, State, Democracy”. He has acted as a reviewer for almost 20 peer-reviewed journals and for the Austrian Panel on Climate Change, Bertelsmann Foundation, German Research Foundation (DFG), Jubilee Fund of Austrian National Bank, and the Swiss National Science Foundation.
