Activist Session: A BALANCED ECONOMY WITHIN PLANETARY BOUNDARIES, BASED ON SOLIDARITY, NOT ON ECONOMIC GROWTH – WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
A post-corporate economy can not wait if we are to seriously tackle climate change, dramatic loss of biodiversity, resource depletion and rampant inequality. This requires a change of the very DNA of the system. How can this be done? There is already a wealth of good practices to reuse and scale up. One key precondition is that companies evolve from entities designed to maximize profits for shareholders, to structures producing value for the common good.
Benefit corporations, community interest companies, multi-stakeholder cooperatives and other alternative ownership models are mushrooming, adding up to a pre-view of an economy beyond capitalism. If these inspiring examples will remain isolated islands in an ocean of globalized capitalism or grow and, eventually, coalesce into a new economic system, probably depends to a large extent on the support given by elected bodies regarding eg public procurement, design of taxes and supply of credit.
