Artistic Session: Himalayan Gold
Each year at the start of summer entire villages are emptied in the Dolpo region of Western Nepal as people migrate to the mountains to search for yartsa gunbu, - a particular hybrid of caterpillar and fungus that grows in the Himalayan plateaus. Yartsa gunbu is the world's most expensive biological resource, valued for its libido boosting and medicinal properties. For the people of Dolpo it is the main source of cash income from cross-border trade with China. During the past two decades the price for yartsa gunbu has surged by over 2000 percent, leading to severe overharvesting. Yartsa gunbu is currently in decline and it's future is uncertain, as is the future of the people who depend on it for their livelihoods. Follow along on a photographic 35-day journey into the depths of Nepal to get a glimpse into the changing world of a nomadic subsistence economy trying to adapt to the global market.
