Activist Session: Production of Solar Lamps in Africa
Solux started already in the early 1994 to develop concepts in direction of local production. The result of these deliberations was the “Solux Workshop Concept”. Within this concept a new type of solar lamp was developed which could be delivered in the form of a kit, ready for assembly in cooperation with a local partner.
All the components are sent to the local assembly site. These components are then assembled in a dedicated workshop. These proceedings provide the chance to substitute components with local content over a period of time.
The benefits of this type of work include a high degree of awareness- and capacity building, practical training in an electrician’s work, an increased consciousness of what quality means and certainly improved self-esteem and, last but not least, a product comes out of this process: a functioning solar lamp for people living off-grid.
