Artistic Session: Songs of other worlds—for environmental justice and degrowth
Original songs by Rut Elliot Blomqvist are interlaced with songs, poems, and fragments of literature by singers and writer who have voiced critiques of industrial capitalism from the 19th century until today. Elliot engages with Scandinavian and American traditions of protest culture and brings out the conflicts within these traditions between progressive pro-industrial forces and peasants’ and indigenous peoples’ resistance against imperial expansion. At the heart of this performance about environmental justice lies the question: “What is the point of art?” Through melodies and lyrics that move seamlessly between grief and hope, Elliot invites the audience to think about what art can—and can’t—do in a situation of unparalleled environmental destruction and injustice.
