Artistic Session: Arguing for Utopia
Our world is one of shifting conflicts, where news and ideas are lost in the mists of fakery and misrepresentation, where language seems deliberately offensive and obtuse and where narratives of hate trump considered, fact-based arguments. In focussing on the language used in both fictional conflict and real-world analysis, this workshop will develop methods of dealing with conflict as much as narrative arguments and rhetorical devices.
Following a discussion of real-world debates and the use of conflict in fiction, participants will be guided through creative processes as they work together to produce scenarios and dialogues which they will then perform to their peers. Having considered the arguments, participants will critique each other's work using techniques and language that will encourage reflection, thereby motivating the authors to edit and refine their dialogues.
