Individual Paper: Overcoming overconsumption before it consumes us
The potential of local waste prevention initiatives as a gateway to a degrowth society
Human activities and especially the over-consuming Western society lifestyles have been identified as the main causes of climate change and environmental degradation. Sustainable consumption holds limits of its own, and degrowth offers a broader framework for the transformation of the society in order to answer the threefold crisis: environmental, economic and social. Nevertheless, in a context of a widening gap between environmental knowledge and actions, putting theory into practice remains quite of a challenge. Local initiatives have however been spreading and taking concrete actions to overthrow this tendency. The issue of waste being a central symptom of the culture of consumption, waste prevention is the focus of the present paper. Putting on socio-psychological lenses, the following study investigates the potential of waste prevention initiatives to contribute to a degrowth society. A French case-study demonstrates that such alternatives embody possibilities to change individual behaviors and attitudes, by promoting sufficiency and conviviality as core aspirations.
