Matthias Schmelzer lives in Berlin, works as an economic historian at Zurich University and as a free-lancer for Konzeptwerk Neue ├ľkonomie and is active in the degrowth and climate justice movement. He wrote a thesis on the hegemony of the growth paradigm. He did research on the degrowth movement as a fellow at DFG-Kolleg "Degrowth Societies" in Jena.

He wrote a thesis on the hegemony of the growth paradigm. He is author of "The Hegemony of Growth. The OECD and the Making of the Economic Growth Paradigm" (winner of the best dissertation prize by the World Economic History Congress (WEHC) 2015) and has written on 20th century social and economic history, monetary politics, international organizations, and degrowth. His current research interests include neoliberalism, the history of critiques of economic growth, the OECD, and social-ecological transformations.
